How My Reviews Work

All of the reviews in the blog posts on this site are going to be completely my own thoughts and opinions.

If I say an album is good and I enjoyed it, does it make the album good?

Not necessarily!

If I say an album is bad and I didn’t enjoy it, dos it make the album bad?

Not necessarily!

I’d say that every album ever released is someones favourite somewhere.

That being said, here is the criteria that I’ll be taking into consideration for each album or musical performance:

1. Enjoyability

This should be the most important factor for anything you do in life: Do you enjoy it?

An album can me musically terrible and make music majors cry but if I enjoy it, I’ll be rating it high.

2. Nostalgia

You could argue that this shouldn’t be taken into account because nostalgia is cheap and not everyone has the same level of nostalgia for the same pieces of music. To that I’d say “Well you’re not writing this blog are you? :)”

If listening to the album makes me think of good times and takes me somewhere nice in my life, I’ll be rating it high.

3. How it makes me feel

To me, music should take the listener on a journey and make them feel something.

If the music is a great song on its own, then it’s probably a great song. But if the song is great and it makes me close my eyes and lay back and just melt away, I’d consider it an amazing song. Conversely if I listen to a song and just come away thinking “that’s a nice song” it loses a lot of impact for me.

4. Lyrics

This kind of overlaps with the point above but how good the lyrics are really play into how listenable a piece of music is.

5. How good the music is

Hear me out!

This one means how good is the musician on this song, how good is the technical ability on this song or album. If the music is just backed by a drum loop and some garageband effects, I’m not going to rate it highly here.

However, if the instrument playing and sound on the album makes me pull out a stank face, it’s getting top marks.

Rating

Each of the criteria above feed into a rating out of 5.

5.0 out of 5.0 stars

When rating an album, each song will have an individual rating out of 5 and the album itself will be rated out of 5.

The album rating won’t always be an average of the songs’ rating. Sometimes I might not love every single song but all of them together one after another on an album could be something I really love and the rating will reflect that.

I’ll have the comments on for each post and I’d love to hear each and every thought. Any horrific comments will be removed though.
